Another Fabulous Friday lovers!
Who’s as excited as I am? The weekend is here and also SWEAT PANTS lol. Last week I had the chance to attend a fantastic fashion party hosted by Diana Opoti Pr and coordinated by Anne-Sophie Misian my long time friend at the Circle Art Gallery. What was happening you ask, well the revolution of Kenyan Fashion. From the bottomless wine, finger liking haurves hors-d’oeuvre’s to the fabulous hosting and the amazing company. I have one word to describe that party LIT!
I am in love with Kenyan designers and how they have taken charge of their evolution. Designers like Katungulu Mwendwa who have said fuck it! Again and Again who have pushed leaps and bounds to show that Africa is actually where it is. Well have you been dying to get your hands on one of her designs? Allow me to introduce to you Ichyulu.
Ichyulu is an online concept store offering select edits from African designers. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Ichyulu provides a curated retail experience for those who seek unique pieces to match their individual style. The designers we met that night at the Fashion Installlation were Chichia London and Arieta Mujay.
Christine Mhando is a Tanzanian-born, London-based designer. Christine launched Chichia London, the ready to wear label that bears her childhood nickname, in 2007 as an amalgamation of both continents and cultures from which the designer was born and raised. Chichia London’s signature transpires from the artful application of the ‘khanga’, a traditional East African cotton-printed fabric. With Beyoncé as a fan, Chichia London goes from strength to strength as an international African brand that modernises and transforms traditional East African textiles into stylish, contemporary and fashionable attire.
If you remember the Rihanna X River Island collaboration. Well Arieta worked on the River Island collaboration with Rihanna and was hand picked by Rihanna. A heavy influence in Lagos Fashion week and a top contributor for the Cosmopolitan Online magazine you can imagine she is quite the force to recon with. They worked together on many of her fabulous collections. This is how this collaboration came to life.
If you are looking to see more of her collection check it out on ichyulu.com
My take on the direction that fashion is moving in in Kenya well if I was entirely honest, we are giving the rest of Africa and also the world a run for their money. Watch out for designers coming up like Ikojn who has a fabulous line coming out and I will be updating you guys on so many fashion designers coming up. If you know any who may be interested on a Friday feature, collaboration and I need to know about hit me up firstname.lastname@example.org .
